Authority in Jesus

I believe that one of the things the enemy is most afraid of is believers, like you and I, getting a true revelation of the authority we have in the name of Jesus. He knows that when we have a full understanding of our authority in Jesus, his work will be hindered.

Consequently, from when we were young, Satan has been seeking to do all he can to have us reject Jesus or, if that fails, have us live disempowered as a result of our lack of knowledge of the authority we have in Jesus.

Understanding Authority

If we are to understand our authority in Jesus then we first need to realise that each of us have had differing experiences of authority, throughout our lives, that have led us to having a variety of perceptions about authority. Hence what we understand by the word ‘authority’ may well vary.

  1. Our experience of authority is likely to have been shaped by our experience of authority in our families, workplaces, churches and nations. Some will have been blessed to experience authority being exercised in a Godly, gracious manner but many of may well have experienced authority being used in a less Godly, gracious way.

  2. Our perception of authority is likely to have been influenced by how we have been personally impacted by the use of authority. For some, authority will be perceived as something that is important to create safeguards and boundaries, but sadly for others authority will be perceived as something that has been used to dominate and control.

  3. Our understanding of authority – whilst our understanding of authority will differ, we need to seek God’s leading so that we can have a true biblical understanding of the gift of authority, when exercised God’s way.

Who is Jesus?

If we are to live through the authority that we have in Jesus then we first need understand who Jesus is and who we are in relation to Him. In Matthew 16:16 Jesus asked the disciples ‘Who do people say that I am?’ Peter answers: ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Knowing this, deep within our spirits, provides us with confidence that the Jesus is indeed the son of God, the promised Messiah and the anointed one.

What a wonderful revelation; to know that when we prayer ‘in the name of Jesus’ we are praying in the authority of the son of God, the promised Messiah and the anointed one whose anointing breaks every yoke of the enemy.

Even greater it is to know that, through Jesus, we are now joint heirs with him, as we have been adopted into God’s family. We are the sons and daughters of God; our elder brother Jesus is the one in whose name we pray.

Philippians 2:9-11 says it well when it tells us that Jesus is the ‘name that is above every name’ and that ‘at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.’

As we come before God in prayer it is good to know that:

  • The source of our authority is in Jesus

  • The strength of our authority is in Jesus

  • The supernatural advantage we have is through authority in Jesus.

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭28:18-29 reaffirms this:‬‬‬

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”

When we pray let’s remember the words of Matthew‬ ‭16:19‬ ‭which tells us that God has given us the keys of the kingdom of heaven, with the verse going on to tell us that whatever we bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever we loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.‬‬

Our Response

So what will be our response to the authority we have been given in Jesus?

When we have a revelation of the source, strength and supernatural power we have when we pray in the name of Jesus we will:

  1. Pray bigger prayers and pray with great confidence.

  2. Walk with a new found sense of expectancy, believing that with God, all things are possible.

  3. Lead with fresh vision, fuelled by hearts that have been ignited with fresh fire.

Next time the enemy tries to tell you that you are not able, or that the task is too great, rise up in the authority of Jesus, declaring His name, and declaring Colossians 2:15 which reminds us that Jesus has disarmed the powers and authorities and made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross!
